Convert Video to GIF
Turn a specific moment from a video into an animated GIF without uploading the source file. The visual timeline lets you choose the exact section you want before conversion, so there is no need to trim the video in a separate tool or convert the entire recording by accident.
Select the best part of your video
After choosing a file, drag the start and end handles to highlight the part that should become a GIF. The video preview seeks to each adjusted boundary, and Preview selection plays only the chosen range. You can also enter decimal start and end times for precise control.
GIF works best for short reactions, product demonstrations, interface recordings, and small looping animations. Start with the shortest clip that communicates the idea. A two- or three-second selection is usually easier to share than a long animation and takes much less time to process.
Balance smoothness, dimensions, and file size
Frame rate controls how many images are stored for each second. Choose 5 fps for a compact result, 10 fps for a practical default, or 15–20 fps when smoother motion matters more than file size. Output width provides another strong size control. Reducing a large video to 320 or 480 pixels wide can substantially reduce the number of pixels stored in every frame.
The converter generates a color palette from the selected segment and applies it to the final looping GIF. This produces more consistent colors than a simple frame-by-frame conversion. GIF does not contain an audio track, so sound from the source video is intentionally omitted.
Private browser-based conversion
MediaFun uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The selected video is copied into a temporary browser file system, converted locally, and removed when processing finishes. The downloadable GIF is exposed through a temporary browser URL rather than uploaded to a remote conversion service.
Browser conversion is slower than native desktop FFmpeg, especially for high-resolution or long clips. Keep selections short, leave the tab open while processing, and use Cancel if you need to change the range or settings. Once the output is ready, preview the animation, download it, or continue with the GIF compression tool.
FAQ
Can I convert only part of a video to GIF?
Yes. Drag the start and end handles on the timeline or enter exact times. Only the highlighted segment is converted.
How can I make the GIF file smaller?
Select a shorter clip, choose a lower frame rate, or reduce the output width. These changes usually have the greatest effect on GIF size.
What frame rates are available?
You can choose 5, 10, 15, or 20 frames per second. Higher frame rates look smoother but create larger files and take longer to process.
Is there a file size limit?
The input limit is 100 MB. Short clips are strongly recommended because GIF stores many full image frames and can become very large.
Does conversion happen on a server?
No. FFmpeg runs through WebAssembly in your browser, and your source video is not uploaded to our servers.
